Rachel Betru to do reading in Red Oak, TX

Rachel will have a reading at the Taste of Red Oak on January 15th, 2009 from 5:30-7:30pm.  The event will be held at the Red Oak Municipal Center at 200 Lakeview Pkwy Red Oak, TX 75154.  The children’s reading is taken from fictional camping stories and will be in conjunction with the Red Oak Public Library, promoting literacy in young readers.  Food for children will be provided.

Write

I learned something today. 

Well, it should be no surprise; we learn something everyday.  I was at work, talking to a lady about this up-and-coming book, and the conversation started grazing towards the importance of history in writing.

Now, I’m always up for a good fiction-today story, but the thing I realized- why I am so drawn to historical fiction- is it’s power to give people in the past a voice for today.  It also educates me on the lessons people learned many years ago, as well as helps me identify with my roots.

I left work today thinking about all the avenues I could take this writing gig.  I could continue this book with a few sequels, and make a whole series on historical fiction.  I could team up with my mother (who is one of my favorite writers) and work on a piece about interacial children (which I am a product of.)  I could do a biography on Sarah Palin (I’ll wait till November on that one.)  This whole experience is drawing me in- more of me than I thought.  And, I will give my “props” to writers out there- it’s so hard to even journal, when your days energy consists of learning how to phrase every sentence you type- you may not want to look at another computer again!  I’m finding that this road of writing is not just one mechanical “thing” God wants me to do, but it’s unfolded into a passion of my life. 

Yes, I can write for God, and change the whole world!  Who would’ve thought?!  I can savor this time, and make it the sweetest fragrance, the most vulnerable experience for me and Him than I’ve ever known; it just excites me to be a part of it.  Beyond the writers block and the thoughts of ‘Oh my word; what am I doing to this story?!’ to being fascinated at what was just written is this unrelinquishing joy that anyone who’s accomplished their joy has felt.  Well, now I’m rambling- I’m off to watch a movie that should hopefully inspire me to continue my story.  I hope this little blog has interested you all some.

I know; I haven’t really posted anything on the book I’m writing so far, but I was so excited on this lead that I had to write about it.  I was working at my local library, when in walks the one- and I mean one patron we have that is from England (british accent and all) and I decide to ask her if she knows any information about England for my book. (I am writing a historical fiction book that takes place in the 16th century.)  Lo and behold, she has a good friend from England, who is an English historian, and he travels with his family all over the world studying history.  This is great news, not just for this book, but for any future books involving history that might just come out. (Not to mention I am a MAJOR history buff.)  So, keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I continue to put this story down, and get it out there- it’s a story worth being told.
